Fairfield, NJ – Garden on the Wall® (GOTW) announced today that the firm has achieved a significant industry milestone with the publication of an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) for its preserved garden and moss wall installations. This third-party verified transparency document makes GOTW the only preserved moss wall and garden provider in the world with a published EPD – providing architects, interior designers, and building owners with complete lifecycle environmental impact data, from raw material extraction through manufacturing and end-of-life recovery.
An EPD is widely regarded as the gold standard in environmental transparency for building materials. Governed by international standards (ISO 14025 and EN 15804), EPDs require independent third-party verification of a product’s environmental footprint across its entire lifecycle. For commercial designers specifying materials for LEED projects, a published EPD delivers the verified data needed for Material & Resources (MR) credits and responsible material selection.
“This is a landmark moment for our company and for the preserved garden industry as a whole,” said GOTW’s Miné Hisim, Founder & Managing Partner. “From the very beginning, we have built our business on the belief that transparency and sustainability are not optional – they are essential. Having a published EPD means that every architect and designer who specifies our gardens can do so with full confidence in the environmental data behind them. No other preserved garden or moss wall provider in the world can offer that level of verified transparency.”
A Decade of Transparency, Verified
GOTW’s published EPD provides documented environmental impact data across all lifecycle stages, including global warming potential, ozone depletion, acidification, eutrophication, and resource depletion. The declaration also reflects the firm’s Re-Leaf take-back program, which ensures end-of-life recovery of previously installed gardens - a circular economy practice that further distinguishes GOTW’s commitment to environmental stewardship.
“The preserved garden market is relatively new to U.S. commercial interiors, and industry-wide standards have not yet been established,” said Can Ozturk, GOTW’s Director of Architectural Sales and Chief Sustainability Officer. “That regulatory gap is exactly why this EPD matters so much. Without verified environmental data, designers are left to rely on claims that may or may not hold up to scrutiny. Our EPD eliminates that guesswork. It gives project teams the same level of environmental documentation they expect from any other building material they specify.”
Ozturk continued, “Material transparency isn’t optional anymore - it’s essential. Architects and designers working on LEED-certified projects need verified data, not marketing brochures. Our published EPD delivers exactly that, and we’re proud to be the ones raising the bar for our entire industry.”
Building on an Unmatched Foundation
The published EPD adds to GOTW’s already unmatched portfolio of third-party sustainability and material health credentials. The firm remains the only preserved garden provider with:
• A published Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) with complete lifecycle environmental impact data
• A published Health Product Declaration (HPD v2.3) disclosing ingredients up to 100 parts per million for the entire preserved garden system
• ASTM E-84 Class A Fire Rating for complete garden systems (not just individual components)
• California Department of Public Health (CDPH) VOC compliance
• 100% Bio-Based Carbon Content per ASTM 6866
• Red List Free certification and Declare Label
• Listings in the mindful MATERIALS database and Sustainable Materials Transparency Catalog
• Credit contributions for LEED v4.1, WELL Building Standard, Fitwel, and BREEAM
“We have always believed that if you can’t document it, you can’t claim it,” said Hisim. “Every credential we’ve earned over the past decade has been about giving architects and designers the confidence to specify our gardens knowing that what they’re bringing into their projects has been tested, verified, and documented by independent third parties. The EPD is the culmination of that journey - and it’s a standard we hope the rest of the industry will follow.”
1,900+ Installations and Growing
To date, GOTW has completed more than 1,900 installations covering over 182,000 square feet across workplace, healthcare, hospitality, and aviation projects for Fortune 500 clients including Google, Microsoft, Amazon, Mayo Clinic, Memorial Sloan Kettering, Hilton, and Marriott. The firm’s 460+ award-winning projects, including recognition from Interior Design Magazine Best of Year, Architizer A+ Awards, and Best of NeoCon, reflect GOTW’s commitment to artistry and excellence alongside its sustainability leadership.
GOTW’s preserved gardens require zero maintenance, no water, no light, and no ongoing care, with lifecycles exceeding 20 years – delivering the lowest total cost of ownership of any biophilic solution. All installations are backed by the firm’s 7-year warranty.
“This EPD represents more than a certification - it’s a statement about who we are and how we operate,” said Ozturk. “We invite every architect, designer, and building owner to compare. When material transparency is the standard, quality rises to the top. And that’s good for everyone - the design community, building occupants, and the planet.”
